MYTHOLOGY MEME » four titans » oceanus [4/4]
Okay, so I made a thing for AP Art History. It’s a music project where you have to pick an image of any work of art – sculpture, painting, architecture, etc. – and put it to a song that is relevant to the image somehow. I chose Eros and Psyche by Antonio Canova and put it to Cosmic Love by Florence and the Machine. Now, before all y’all are just like “okay, good going asshat, you managed to make a lyric video”, let me explain the correlation first.
This is honestly my favorite Greek Myth. Psyche was a mortal, considered to be more beautiful than Aphrodite. Aphrodite, Eros’ mother, sent him to shoot Psyche with a golden arrow to make her fall in love with a hideous beast to punish her for her beauty. Eros, upon witnessing her immense beauty, dropped his golden arrow, pricking himself instead and falling hopelessly in love with her. The two married after a bit of time and spent time together under the darkness of night. The condition to them being together was that Psyche could never see Eros’ face. One of her sisters convinced her that she was married to a monster. Curious about whom she was married to, she lit an oil lamp and held it over him to reveal he was in fact a God. A drop of oil fell on him, starting him awake. Betrayed, he left her. When her sisters learned of who her love was, they jumped to their deaths off of a cliff, trying to use Zephyr to take them to Olympus. Psyche wanders the Earth for her lost love, consulting Demeter and Athena for assistance, both refusing to work against Aphrodite. Eventually, she goes to Aphrodite for help, after which she is sent on a series of trials. In her final trial, she was sent to the Underworld, to receive a remedy for Aphrodite’s fading beauty from Persephone. After departing from the Underworld and gracing Earth again, she opens the box in hopes of increasing her own beauty, in which she instead finds a spell for a deep, unmoving, never ending slumber. Upon learning of what happened, Eros goes to Psyche, undoing the sleeping spell. He goes to Zeus who grants Psyche immortality in order to allow them to be married as equals.
I think now it’s kind of self-explanatory as far as the piece/song goes..
World’s Most Beautiful Abandoned Places
Italian product manager and web designer Francesco Mugnai recently added a collection of images to his blog touting some of the most beautiful images of abandoned spots and modern ruins that he’d ever seen. The images Mugnai has captured come from empty castles, shuttered power plants, and dilapidated churches around the world. From a sunken yacht in Antarctica to a forever-closed amusement park in Japan, these images all make up a sort of anti-phoenix; rather than rising as new from the ashes, these husks remain preserved in decomposition, forcing viewers to confront the strange beauty of ruination.
